Here's how to start working with Chinese characters in Windows XP:

1: Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Regional and Language Options

2: Click on the Languages tab

3: If the 'Install files for East Asian languages' tick box is unticked, you will need to tick it and follow the subsequent prompts. Once East Asian languages are successfully installed, proceed to the next step.

4: Click on Details (in the Languages tab of the Regional and Language Options control panel).

5: Add Chinese (PRC) and the keyboard layout / IME for 'Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0'

6: OK out of the control panel. Chinese input should now be available: To switch between English and Chinese language, press Ctrl-Space. The default is usually 'sentence mode', i.e. you type Pinyin and the IME decides by the context which Chinese characters you intended to use. Further help is available from the 'language bar' at the bottom of your computer screen.

Chinese Typing: Alt-Shift changes the keyboard layout. Ctrl-Space changes the IME
