The spammer may have got your e-mail login details via a phishing or social engineering scam.

The best thing to do is to go to the settings of your e-mail account and change your password. It would also be a good idea to check your contact information such as your alternative e-mail address just in case the spammer made some alterations. The spammer may put in his/her own e-mail address so that, once you have changed the password, he/she can easily report the password as forgotten then your e-mail provider will send a new password to his/her address - putting you back in the same situation you were in before :(

It will also be wise to have your PC scanned for malware with a reliable security tool. lastly, don't forget to inform your e-mail contacts that the e-mails were not sent by you and advise them to scan their computers for malware as well, just in case. What can you do about stolen e-mail contacts?go to the origin of your account (yahoo, gmail etc) and have it deleted
